Police job Posted on April 25th

I read many letters to the editor criticizing the Chicago police for killing the cougar. I love animals and would have loved to have seen that this cougar could have been humanely trapped or tranquilized and relocated. However, there are some realities that some of the letter writers apparently haven’t thought of.

First, cops don’t carry tranquilizer guns. This cougar had been sighted multiple times and had eluded capture. Calling animal control would have taken a lot of time, during which the cougar probably would have escaped and the animal would still be at large.

Second, a cougar is a wild animal who will kill small dogs and cats and, yes, attack small children. What would the headlines have been like if the cops failed to get rid of the cougar, and a week later a child was tragically mauled?

Finally, the job of the police is to protect people, not animals.
