Museum nonsense Posted on May 7th
The Children’s Museum in Chicago is fine where it’s at on Navy Pier. Those who are so determined to spend a fortune would do better by installing a really good coffee shop in every children’s museum in the state of Illinois. Maximum caffeination is what these places really need. Organized play isn’t really play at all. Kids go through the motions and then ask “What’s next?”
I’ve never been to a children’s museum anywhere that was memorable for anything beyond its typical soporific effect.
So bring on the coffee with a double shot of espresso please! Better still would be for parents to save the $9 per person by staying home, shutting off the electronics and doing it themselves. Does anyone really need a pricey “museum” to make bubbles, splash in water, draw or fool with mirrors?
Kids who have been led around “play stations” their entire short lives may need a bit of time to get used to working with raw materials, but they’ll come around once they hear the only valid response to their sad plea of “I’m bored!”
