Was the Zimbabwe election legitimate? Posted on June 28th

The UN Security Council has said it deeply regrets Zimbabwe’s decision to press ahead with the presidential run off election on Friday despite the UN’s warnings that it could not be free and fair. Did you vote in Zimbabwe?

Western diplomats say the council was blocked from making a stronger statement by South Africa which objected to a draft that described the elections as illegitimate.

The United States said it would be pressing for sanctions.

Zimbabwe’s opposition leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, who boycotted the vote, said the election was an exercise in mass intimidation by a desperate dictatorship.
