Will the hostages rescue change Colombian politics? Posted on July 3rd

The former Colombian presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt, held hostage by left-wing Farc rebels for six years, has decribed her dramatic rescue by security forces as a miracle. How significant is the development for Colombian politics?

In a television interview she described the moment she and her fourteen fellow captives realised they were free.

The hostages, including three American military contractors, were freed from captivity in the Guaviare region close to the Venezuelan border

The President of Colombia Alvaro Uribe appealed to the Farc to release the many hundreds of hostages they are still holding.
